About

How Iron Blend Land started

Marcus Holt opened Iron Blend Land in the spring of 2018 after spending six years coaching at a commercial gym where the incentive structure rewarded membership sales over actual training outcomes. He had watched too many people pay for memberships they barely used, follow programmes that went nowhere, and get injured because nobody corrected their technique. The original space was a 2,400 square-foot unit on a light industrial estate, with second-hand racks, a chalk bucket, and a whiteboard. The first month had eleven members. Marcus coached every session himself.

Founder

Marcus Holt spent six years as a coach at a large commercial gym before opening Iron Blend Land in 2018. He holds a Level 4 Strength and Conditioning qualification and completed a postgraduate certificate in sports science at Loughborough University in 2013. Before going out on his own, he ran the strength programme for a semi-professional football club in the East Midlands for two seasons. He is a competitive powerlifter in the 93 kg class and has totalled over 700 kg in competition, though he is the first to say that his best coaching days are the ones where a member finally nails their hip hinge. He reads obsessively about periodisation theory and keeps a paper training log, which he considers non-negotiable.
